[Second poem within the context of the current catastrophic mega-fire emergency here in NSW Australia. WordPress has again left-justified my indentations. The photo is of the Zen garden Karesansui of Ryoan-Ji, Kyoto.]

Spreading out the new unkinkably five-star hose on Tinderbox Tuesday,
the first Sydney Catastrophic Fire Alert, suddenly

in the wise peripheral of my waning eye, a lone echidna waddled its way north
across our paddock dry with desperation.

Don’t know why, but this spike wave of twenty million year-old monotreme
undulating its determined intent to our receding dam

filled me with a strange sense of smiling peace
almost completely indistinguishable
from love
