Joanna Macy Talk

[Joanna Macy is one of my inspirations, this grandmother in her 80s. Perhaps one of her most powerful speeches, a long riff also on the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke. Positive disintegration. Towards One People in One World. The bell of darkness. This one is for Kristi and Nick.]

  1. She is definitely inspirational…plus, your post led to more cool stuff as well!
And thanks for the personal mention, Peter…i’m honored…

  2. Great, thanks Kristi, and hope those boxing rounds are now over and all is well on The Good Ship Kristi…

  3. thanks Peter…6 major rounds behind me…46 minor matches to go…
    piece o’ cake !!!

    • Great to hear Kristi! BTW, I’ll copy here some more comments I made to Nick: ‘I was in tears at several points in the Macy speech, especially as she was talking about her grandchildren, the joy and the sadness at their living in a world being destroyed… Also liked the notions of a central question being at the centre of your life, and you having to find it, and also the idea of the challenge of being fully present to the world, in the Now, even as it is being destroyed…(I think that may be the answer to the despair temptation…). I did a memorable weekend workshop with Joanna in Sydney exactly twenty years ago.’

  4. I’m honoured for the mention Peter. I can see why she’s a great inspiration to us all. Great find for me thanks

  5. My pleasure, Nick. I was in tears at several points in the speech, especially as she was talking about her grandchildren, the joy and the sadness at their living in a world being destroyed… Also liked the notions of a central question being at the centre of your life, and you having to find it, and also the idea of the challenge of being fully present to the world, in the Now, even as it is being destroyed…(I think that may be the answer to the despair temptation…). I did a memorable weekend workshop with Joanna in Sydney exactly twenty years ago.

  6. She is an amazing spirit and that moment mentioning her grandchildren did the exact same thing to me. So there is something universal there I suspect.

Hearing her mention “systems”, I wonder if she is an explicit anti-capitalist and whether she incorporates that analysis into her talks?

  7. G’day Dave, good to hear from ya. Re ‘systems’ I think Macy is more into General Systems Theory a la Bertalanffy, Laszlo, Meadows et al, the way it meshes for her with aspects of Buddhism (e.g. Thich Naht Hanhs’ ‘Interbeing’ etc.). Always this tension maybe anyway between ‘capitalism’ and ‘industrialism’ as main drivers of ecocide. She would probably go for ‘industrialism’…Fires in California in December, the new real?

  8. Peter, I finally got around to listening to Joanna Macy’s talk, and so glad I did. She brings solace, joy and wisdom to bear on the greatest questions that we need to face, including the most personal ones – such as why am I here? Thanks for sharing the words of someone who inspired you so much.
