Caught in Golden Amber. A Libretto

Linh Dihn, White House image 2012

[Wrote this 29 years ago in a Black Forest hotel. Was meant for possible use in free theatre, possibly street theatre, in which I was involved at the time. Amber containing fossilised insects has often been found on the shores of the Baltic. Photo above by Linh Dihn, 2012.]

Caught in Golden Amber. A Libretto

Unders:

O zombies that rule us
Makers, breakers of men
You ruin our children
With a slash of your pen

You ruin our water
Our bread and our wine
A curse on your progeny
They’re no better than mine!

Uppers:

O brothers don’t curse us
We’re as helpless as you
We’re caught in The Machine
And we don’t like what we do

Chorus:

We don’t like each other
We’re as helpless as flies
Caught in golden amber
As this green world dies
Caught in golden amber
As this green world dies

Unders:

Don’t call us ‘brothers’
Don’t give us that crap
You may feel damn helpless
But it’s YOUR bloody Trap!

Uppers:

You know that’s rubbish
(It’s what’s driving you mad)
We’re raping this planet together
And we’re not doing bad

Unders:

You’re not doing bad
Is what you meant to say
Maybe we’ve all been had
But now it’s your turn to pay

Uppers:

You don’t seem to realise
How much we suffer too
You’re too busy envying us
As we bore ourselves blue

Unders:

So them up there
Are as bored as us
Christ, send us scalpels
And we’ll drain off the puss!

We’ll march to their palaces
Dressed as doctors and nurses
We’ll relieve them of their boredom
And then of their purses

Uppers:

Don’t forget our hounds
Our cops and our prisons
Please, please don’t make us
Make those awful decisions!

We’d really hate
To have to get serious
If footy, car and telly
Can’t keep you delirious…

Unders:

We’re not as dead
As you’d like us to be
There’s still wilderness in us
That longs to run free

There’s times when the concrete
Burns under foot
There’s times when the meat
Kicks at the hook

Uppers:

There’s times when the collar
Chafes at the neck
There’s times when it gets lonely
Here on Titanic’s Upper Deck

Chorus:

We don’t like each other
We’re all as helpless as flies
Caught in golden amber
As this green world dies

Caught in golden amber
As this green world dies
