Life & Literature

Once upon a time on the Ettersberg
there was an oak tree with a view of heaven
under which Goethe sat with Eckermann
discussing life & literature. In 1937

the Nazis constructed a fence around it,
protecting the oak by special decree, then
bulldozed the forest around the tree.
Having blitzed the beech trees the black

uniform developers named the place benign
as absence: Beech Wood, Buchenwald.
Over the camp entrance they put up a sign:
Jedem das Seine, to each his own.

For the amusement of the guards of hate
there was a small zoo outside the gate

where animals were treated well.
