For God’s Sake

[The photo was taken near East’s beach at Kiama, south coast. The poem is an older one.]

For God’s Sake

for God’s sake
who in hell
is that

you say
as you look
in the mirror

grimacing
under the puffed up mask
of your grandfather

or watch
with amused
horror

as you perform
the daily rituals
of polite constraint

lunatic lectures
your thoughts
chasing themselves

into admiration
as you cut
grass, vines

and lines
at the end
for God’s sake
