15 February 2003: a hint for the future?

[I remember it well. About 250,000 of us in Sydney on Feb 15 2003, then we went to a pub in Glebe and read our own anti-war poems as TV screens above us showed the simultaneous demonstrations of 30 million people around the world. A new politico-spiritual moment in human evolution. Of course the imperialist elites in the US, Britain and Australia simply disregarded it and invaded Iraq. But it was the world’s first global mass demonstration, and the first against a war BEFORE it happened. The trailer points out the connections to subsequent movements like the Arab Spring and Occupy. Perhaps we are learning from each other across the cultures and movements. Perhaps we need something this big again to question what is threatening us all via climate chaos and ecocide: global capitalism. AND perhaps we also need thinking about how to move beyond street demonstrations towards anti-systemic mass civil disobedience, direct action, global mutual aid, relocalising economies and building alternative institutions of participatory democracy at all levels… Another world is possible, folks.
