The Hard Yards

[ An unpublished poem from fours years ago. Enjoy.]

The Hard Yards

My poems an all-out war
on backyards, front yards
their deep sadness the empty

invisible order of things
eating humans without
appetite, pleasure

a green metal clothesline tree
among three cars, grey concrete
sandbox full of coloured plastic

a forlorn swimming pool
edged by herbicide lawn
in a light drizzle, a bored girl

in a school uniform
bouncing on a trampoline,
a horse standing looking

straight at a wall, a total absence
of blood, apples, angels,
ranting pacifists
