Nina Simone, Ain’t got no…I got Life…

A favourite song from a favourite singer, Nina Simone at a concert in the 60s. A dialectical poem of negation followed by affirmation, both stronger through their juxtaposition. A hymn of revolutionary existentialism negating all the oppressive abstractions (job, family, country, class, church, God) foisted on one and affirming the subversive reality of the body, including its aches, of inner freedom, of life, in a driving Afro-American rhythm that practises what it preaches. As a performer, I admire Simone’s strength, focus, fierceness, the refusal to pander to the audience, the lack of bullshit. Takes you out of the daily grind . Uplifting.
